It's called selective (or partial) desaturation.
1. Duplicate the background layer.
2. Saturation, making the layer (eg, B & W).
3. Apply a layer mask on the plane. Use the brush to paint black to make sure the layer mask (that you are not the image itself). That will bring the background color of these areas. If you make a mistake, change the white brush and go over it.
4. If you are satisfied flatten and save.
If you do not have image editors, you can do in the free section www.picnik.com their effect.
Here's how picnik.com:
Download Image
Click on "Create" tab
Click on "Black and White"
In fact, "painting", choose "Original"
Choose a brush and then paint only the background color you want.
If you make a mistake, go to "effect" and enter the error.
Save the image.
